The AFAB Subcommittee develops standards and guidelines pertaining to AM and FM analog broadcasting services. Technical work in this Subcommittee is primarily focused on the analog audio services which broadcasters provide in the AM and FM frequency bands, and RF requirements stemming from these analog modulation methods.
The DRB Subcommittee develops standards and guidelines pertaining to AM and FM digital broadcasting services. This Subcommittee focuses on the transmission aspects of in-band/on-channel AM and FM digital radio systems, in contrast to the DSM Subcommittee which principally focuses on data (content and metadata) protocols. One specific responsibility of this Subcommittee is to maintain and update as necessary the NRSC-5 In-band/on-channel Digital Radio Broadcasting Standard.
The DSM Subcommittee develops standards and guidelines for digital information that radio broadcasters send to their audiences via the growing number of data transmission technologies in use today. This Subcommittee focuses on data (content and metadata) protocols, in contrast to the NRSC DRB Subcommittee which principally focuses on the transmission aspects of in-band/on-channel AM and FM digital radio systems.
This Subcommittee owns and maintains the body of work from its predecessor, the NRSC Radio Broadcast Data System (RBDS) Subcommittee. This Subcommittee also has responsibility for working with other standards bodies in this area of focus, specifically including the RDS Forum and the International Electrotechnical Committee for the maintenance of the Radio Data System (RDS) Standard currently embodied as IEC-62106.
